The Dangers of Franchise...

It is true that franchising out a business can become the gateway to success as an entrepreneur. The franchising business is not without its pitfalls however. The market situation is such that there are thousands of brands spanning over the market offering to license their trademarks to the potential Franchisees. The promises of quick profits and low investments along with the freedom to be your own boss does seem quite enticing to the potential Franchisee but it just might be that you are going headlong into a trap.

You will find that the market is full of such brands that seek to take advantage of the vulnerable and inexperienced Franchisee. Knowing that the people are interested in buying Franchises an organization may more than welcome the public to buy its Franchise. But the motive behind their doing so may be to rip you of your money and leave you wandering broke. So the question is how do we look out for these pitfalls?

It has been observed that the main reason that leads to this mess is the Franchises negligence towards the contract. When due attention is not paid to the contract the red flags of danger are missed and the person takes on the task even though he would have never done so had he read the contract. One of the things that people misconceive is the role of the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular which is a disclosure document required by law. People generally consider this to be a stamp of approval by the government on the credibility of the franchisor. Whereas in actuality the circular is a green signal for you to start off with your own investigation.

Experts and experienced Franchisees have outlined the most common dangers associated with franchising. The first and foremost of these signs is that if the company is making promises that are enticing yet too good to be true, especially in terms of support and training. Another aspect is to judge the quality of the goods and services. A franchisor may be offering a great program but the poor quality of the goods and services may lead to an unprofitable business. Moreover some Franchise programs are rigged. This is done by those unethical brands that seek to take advantage of the vulnerable Franchisee.

If the franchisor is trying to convince you that you have a sure shot business success at your hands without having to incur any risks whatsoever then please have the brains to read between the lines. Because no matter what the franchisor says there can be no business success without undergoing a risk and such programs are usually meant to cheat you.  Another important thing to consider is the possession of the lease. Depending on your time into the deal the possession of the lease will play an important role especially when and if you want out. Be sure to check out the termination terms because if getting out of the situation is tough then the going may get tough for you. One thing that you should focus your attention on is the franchisors point of interest. If he is interested in expanding his business by selling the Franchise then it’s ok but if his main concern is to sell the Franchise then there is reason to suspect.
